What Do Disciples of Christ Believe?

John 1:17

"For while the Law was given through Moses, grace (unearned favor) and truth came through Jesus Christ."

The Christian Church Disciples of Christ, wishing to avoid non-biblical qualifications for church membership, never developed any type of "creed" that a prospective member would have to profess to be a member of the church. Over the years, this fact has resulted in some claiming that Disciples accept any belief, or that Disciples do not hold to any foundational truths. While we believe the freedom of diversity is one of the hallmarks of our denomination, we do share general beliefs and teachings. We affirm belief in the Trinitarian God, who created the world and who binds Christians in a covenant of love to God's self and to one another. The Bible is our authoritative source and Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior. Some of our distinctive marks include: Shared leadership between lay and clergy, leadership, believer's baptism by immersion, and weekly communion.
